Austin is an incredibly vegan-friendly city. After living here for 4+ years, I've compiled a list of vegan food trucks you can't miss and what I recommend you order from each one if you ever find yourself in the live music capital of the world:

1) Vegan Nom (East Cesar Chavez)

This place has delicious vegan TexMex tacos. Established in 2011, it is famous for its allergen-free vegan queso and iconic sauces.

What you need to order :

  • The Tree Amigos: tofu scramble, cheddar, breakfast sausage. Order it with the crema, chipotle, bells, avocado for the quintessential breakfast taco experience!

  • The Birdie Sanders: buffalo chicken, pepper jack onions, cabbage, crema, chipotle, avocado. This one is my go-to.

2) Arlo’s Food Truck (Multiple Locations)

Arlo's is the spot to go after a night out on 6th Street. It's open until 2:30 AM* and it's loved by vegans and omnivores alike (I can confirm this first hand).

What you need to order :

  • Bac'n Cheezeburger: house-made patty, seitan bacon, cheeze, ketchup, mustard, mayo, pickles, onions, tomatoes, and lettuce. A classic!

  • BBQ Burger: house-made soy-free and gf patty, bbq sauce, chipotle sauce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, and lettuce. My personal favorite, I like to add cheeze and get it with a side of tater tots.

* Arlo's hours have changed due to COVID-19, for more information check their website.

3) Sundaze (Multiple Locations)

Before going vegan, I loved fried chicken. Sundaze's No Frickin Chicken sandwich is it, chicken lovers. They have two locations, North (which is exclusively vegan) and South (offers non-vegan food items).

What you need to order :

  • No Frickin Chicken Sandwich: fried seitan patty, red onions, romaine lettuce, and tomatoes. Get it with the ranch, you won't regret it!

As of now, only Sundaze's North is open. For more updates, visit their Instagram pages @sundaze.veganornot and @sundazenorth

4) Nissi Vegan (East Austin)

Nissi Vegan is authentic Mexican cuisine made vegan. Fun fact, I had Nissi for the first time at an outdoor event where they were giving out free tacos. I saw them cooking their meats and thought "there's no way that is vegan" but it was. I was blown away, I cannot recommend this place enough!

What you need to order :

  • Taco Plate: 4 corn tortillas with the protein of your choice (they offer carne asada, pastor, picadillo, fajita, chicharron, and cheeck'n) with a side of rice and beans. All their proteins are amazing but I usually go for al pastor.

  • Flauta Plate: 3 flautas (fried taquitos) with a side of rice, beans, lettuce, tomatoes, and their amazing crema.

For updates, follow their Instagram page @vegmexnissi.

5) Possum Pizza (Riverside)

I love Possum Pizza for so many reasons: 1) the name, logo, and slogan "Vegan Pizza Trash" 2) their ranch 3) their dough 4) POSSUM’RONI! They opened in 2019 and quickly stole my heart.

What you need to order :

  • Possum’roni Pizza: vegan cheese, red sauce, seitan pepperoni. It's my favorite that takes me back to when I was a kid. Get it with the ranch (have not noticed a pattern here?)

  • Mozz Stix: vegan mozzarella sticks

  • Crispy Fried Chk’n: vegan wings battered and fried with a side of ranch or buffalo ranch

  • Possum Popplers: seitan chkn chunks battered and fried, tossed in buffalo sauce, with vegan parmesan, green onions, and a side of ranch.

To see their full menu, visit Possum Pizza's website.

6) NomBurgers (East Cesar Chavez)

NomBurgers was founded by Chef Chris Rios, founder and creator of The Vegan Nom. It opened its windows this year in the middle of a global pandemic and let me tell you, it's thriving. NomBurgers is all about delicious vegan junk food: griddle smashed burgers, fries, fried pickles, and vegan wings.

What you need to order :

  • The OG Cheeseburger: griddle smashed Impossible patty, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, special nom sauce. The closest thing I've had to a real burger since going vegan.

  • Breakfast Muffin Slammy: Just Egg, sausage patty, provolone, Chipotle Aioli, w/hashbrown. Maple Syrup free upon request. I'm a sucker for a breakfast sandwich, and this one is no exception.

See NomBurgers full menu here.

7) Mission Street Burrito (Riverside)

Mission Street Burrito serves homage San Francisco’s Mission District, affectionately referred to as Super Burritos. During a full quarantine, I ordered from Mission street every weekend. It was an insatiable addiction!

What you need to order :

  • Quesadilla Suiza: Follow Your Heart cheese, sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo, onions, cilantro, green tomatillo salsa, and your choice of protein. I recommend the pollo asado.

  • Super Burrito: pinto or refried beans, Follow Your Heart cheese, sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo, onions, cilantro, green tomatillo salsa.

For menu specials, follow their Instagram @missionstreetburrito

8) PLOW Burger (Multiple Locations)

PLOW stands for Plants Lead Our Way; the are on a mission to not only serve tasty food but operate sustainably while doing so. Their menu consists of burgers with Beyond Meat patties, wings, and shakes made Austin based NadaMoo! icecreams. They also have a weekly specialty burger!

What you need to order :

  • The Campfire Burger: Beyond Burger patty, cheese, pickles, mayo, crispy fried shoestring onions, and barbecue sauce. It's my go-to item at PLOW.

  • Vegan Wings: Buffalo, BBQ or Teriyaki. These are fire and hit the spot if you miss the real thing.

  • Breakfast Tacos: chorizo, egg, and cheddar, served with hashbrowns.

9) Milky Way Shakes (East Cesar Chavez)

Last but not least, dessert. And what could be better than a cold and creamy milkshake in the Texas heat! Milky Way Shakes offers coconut and almond-based chocolate and vanilla icecreams as well as a myriad of toppings and add-ons so you can create the ultimate milkshake!

It's conveniently located next to the VeganNom and NomBurgers.

What you need to order :

  • Buzz Aldrin: blended with coffee-infused almond milk and house-made almond toffee. I recommend getting it with the chocolate base!

  • Star-Berry Lemon Cloud: strawberry, lemon curd, meringues, and a glitter strawberry. I recommend getting it with the vanilla base. It's my personal favorite.
